Polymyositis - Immuno Muscular Disorder

Manish (203.91.193.6) -

Dear All,

My brother (33 years old) has a disease called polymyositis. Here is a medical description of the disease:

Polymyositis is a disease of muscle featuring inflammation of the muscle fibers. The cause of the disease is not known. It begins when white blood cells, the immune cells of inflammation, spontaneously invade muscles. The muscles affected are mostly those closest to the trunk or torso. This results in weakness which can be severe. It is a chronic illness with periods of increased symptoms, called flares or relapses, and decreased symptoms, known as remissions.

Currently, my brother has difficulty climbing stairs, not able to lift heavy loads, etc. After showing him to doctors we learnt that allopathy doesn't have a treatment for this type of disease. Do you know if Yoga can cure such disease? If so, whom/how to approach? If not, can you suggest any alternative treatment?

thanks,

manish

Sorry about your brother Manish. Your brother is quite of age so do you mind giving some history on how the whole problem started? I do not know much about Yoga though I am quite sure there are people who will address that pretty soon.

What is allopathy? It is a system of medical practice that treats diseases by means of remedies which produce effects not similar to those produced by the disease(you may want to call it mainstream medicine)

There are really these types of heart-breaking disease which inflicts pain to the most unfortunate people. Have you tried asking for a second opinion? It is good not to lose hope and while your brother is still fighting this unknown disease, you and you're family should utilize every possible method of treatment for this disease. You didn't mention that you are having money issues so this mean you guys are properly equipped with medical insurance to cover the expense. I would suggest seeing other doctors and consulting yoga professionals to find out for yourself.

It is a sad situation Manish but it is a good thing that you are being there for your brother. It is imperative that you consult widely and arrive at the best type of medication that would help your brother out of the condition.

I would also say if you have proof that a certain alternative medicine method works embrace it because it will be cheaper as a whole.

Therapies are always available for treatment Manish, you can always make your brother try them. Choose the appropriate one and what fits your brother.

Keep clinging on with your brother, what he needs is your full support and understanding. Sometimes the very key to being well is to know that somebody is hoping for your wellness, it is like a placebo effect, like they said, its all in the mind.

I have never heard of this particular disorder before, how serious is it?

Hearing the story of Manish's brother, i think it is very serious. I also had heard of this disease for the first time and it is a little saddening to hear such stories of striving to just live.

I just hope that your brother (Manish) got well. I know that it is hard at your part being his family, but he needs each and every member of the family to continue living.

I have to agree with that Micheie. Though it is hard for you, seeing your brother in that condition, it is much harder for your sick brother being 'in' that condition.

I suggest that aside from comforting him to ease all the pain, you should also motivate him and try to push him to healing. All it takes is for you to make him feel how important life is to just throw things away.

Does this guy Eve even read properly before he types? If he did, he would see that the disease is very serious.

Seeking medical attention is best concerning most circumstances that any one person can think of.

What causes polymyositis?

To date, no cause of polymyositis has been isolated by scientific researchers. There are indicators of heredity (genetic) susceptibility that can be found in some patients. There is indirect evidence of infection by a virus that has yet to be identified in a form of polymyositis that is particularly resistant to treatment, called inclusion body myositis. This form of polymyositis is diagnosed by the pathologist, a physician specialist who interprets the microscope findings of muscle tissue. The muscle tissue in this form of polymyositis displays clear areas within the muscle cells (called vacuoles) when viewed under the magnification of a microscope.
